At Africanismo, we believe in telling stories, so that conscientious consumers know and understand where their products came from and the incredible journey it took to reach them. We believe that items that have good stories behind them (or how people came to find and own them) are infinitely more interesting than mass produced products that can be found everywhere.
We recently started working with a company that has a good story that we are eager to share. Bongi and Blessing Crochet is a women-owned business that creates beautiful crocheted items. Sibongile (Bongi) works with five other women that she met when she was volunteering at a Women’s Shelter in South Africa. Part of her volunteering involved teaching residents how to crochet as part of a broader programme to equip the women with money making skills they could use once they left the shelter. Through these interactions, Bongi quickly learnt who the most skilled and motivated women were, and together they formed a business five years ago. Today their products include good quality children’s toys and blankets, as well as scarves, gloves and hats that have been sold in major retail chains. They have also worked extensively with corporates and can customize their products as required.
Bongi and Blessings Crochet are doing remarkable work. Support their story by becoming a part of it here.
