My love of markets comes from my Mother. A significant part of my childhood was spent exploring and looking at the beautiful and creative things people made. I love weekend flea markets that are a treasure trove of interesting and unusual things that spring up in the morning but disappear by sunset. I relish wandering through the large open warehouse markets that sell fresh produce and other curiosities. I adore the bustle of street vendors, where the smell of food and bargains blend together. My travels across the continent and the globe have taken me to hundreds of different markets, and all these adventures over the years have given me a deep appreciation of authentic, unique and quality items.
So imagine my delight when I came across Amatuli based in the heart of Sandton in Johannesburg. Amatuli has been around for decades and is an institution in the home décor industry. Their large shop stocks products from all over Africa and being there feels as if you are in a dazzling curated space. Everything they buy is original, handcrafted and created with long forgotten skills. With its amazing coffee shop next door and its friendly and efficient staff, it is fast becoming my oasis in the city. Like Africanismo, Amatuli believes that the beauty of the piece is as important as the story behind it. We both seem to share a spirit of fun and adventure as well as a deep love and respect for Africa. Africanismo is very proud to be collaborating with Amatuli to feature some of their products in our store.
