Basket weaving is one of the oldest human crafts. Ethiopian baskets are made from a range of materials including reeds, straw, grasses, palm leaves, bamboo and even string. Basket weaving is pursued primarily, though not exclusively, by women in Ethiopia. Creating the basket is a painstaking and detailed process of coiling and weaving, using the various materials to create a series of geometric patterns.
