Pone: Makala Notebook

The pattern on this notebook is inspired by the Tsonga people of Southern Africa.

‟Makala” means “fire charcoal” in Tsonga. The Tsonga are a Bantu ethnic group native mainly to South Africa and southern Mozambique. Their traditional economy is based on mixed agriculture and pastoralism, and  women use fire mainly for entrepreneurial purposes such as selling peanuts, corn and other traditional foods.

This lined notebook was made entirely in South Africa. The fabric covering the book was created by local designer Pone Creative, and then digitally printed onto a cotton fabric. The fabric was then carefully cut into the appropriate size and each book was assembled by hand. No two notebooks are alike and every single one is one-of-a-kind. This product embodies the passion, creativity and ingenuity of its creators.

At least 12 different people were involved in the creation of this product.
